EV Charger Installationin Worcester

Two things decide whether a 7.4kW charger can go on your wall: what your incoming supply can carry, and how your house is earthed. We check both before we quote a number, so the price you are given is the price you pay.

EV charger installation

What decidesyour EV install

Two things settle most EV quotes before anything else: your main fuse rating and your earthing arrangement.

  • The main fuse rating at your cut-out, usually 60A, 80A or 100A
  • Whether the supply is PME, which decides the earthing solution
  • How far the charge point is from the board
  • Whether the board has a spare way and room for the protection
  • Whether the cable can be run without crossing a neighbour's land
  • Whether you want it tethered or untethered, and where you park

Everything to know about ev charger installation in Worcester

    What actually decides the job

Start at the cut-out, the sealed fuse where the supply enters the house. Worcester stock runs from 60A in older terraces through 80A to the 100A that newer estates get. A 7.4kW charge point draws 32A continuously. Add a 9.5kW shower and an induction hob and a 60A supply is already committed, so the choice is load curtailment, which lets the charger throttle itself when the rest of the house is busy, or an upgrade you have to ask the network operator for. We read the fuse rating off your cut-out on the survey and tell you which of those you are looking at.

Then earthing. Most houses here are TN-C-S, usually called PME, where the supply neutral doubles as the earth. That is fine indoors and a problem outdoors: if the network's combined neutral-earth conductor fractures somewhere in the street, the metal case of a car on your drive can rise to mains voltage. BS 7671 Section 722 is the part of the wiring regulations written for exactly this. There are two straight answers. Most current charge points detect an open PEN themselves and cut the supply, which is the tidy route. Where the unit cannot, the charger gets its own earth electrode driven outside the influence of the network's, and that is a rod in the ground and a morning's work. Which one applies to you depends on the unit you choose, and it is worth knowing before you buy it.

The cable run is the rest of the money. A charger on the wall behind the consumer unit is a short length of 6mm. A charger at the far end of a detached garage is 10mm, a trench or a clipped run along the fascia, and possibly armoured cable. Volt drop over distance is why the cable gets fatter rather than us guessing. Measure the route before you compare quotes, because a quote that has not asked where the car parks is a quote that will change.

One more that catches people out. Since mid-2022 a charge point sold for a home in Great Britain has to be a smart unit under the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021. It has to default to charging off-peak and apply a randomised delay of up to ten minutes, so the street does not all switch on at once. If a listing is cheap because the unit is not smart, that is why.

    What the install covers

One visit where possible, and the paperwork in your hand before we drive off.

    • Cut-out fuse rating and earthing arrangement confirmed on site
    • Dedicated circuit from the board, sized for the real cable run
    • Open-PEN protection, or an earth electrode where the unit needs one
    • Type A RCD protection with 6mA DC detection, as Section 722 requires
    • Load curtailment set up where the supply cannot take the full draw
    • Cable clipped, ducted or buried to suit the route, not left slack
    • Tested, energised, and your first charge started while we are there
    • Electrical Installation Certificate and the notification to Building Control

    From survey to first charge

    Survey

Cut-out fuse, earthing arrangement, board space, and the route from board to parking space, measured.

    Fixed price

In writing, with the cable size and the earthing route named, so you can put it beside another quote and compare like for like.

    Install

Usually half a day. Longer if an earth electrode goes in or the run is buried.

    Test and hand over

Earth loop, RCD and insulation resistance tested, the app paired, the certificate handed over.

EV charger installation across Worcester and Worcestershire

City terraces with no off-street parking are the one case we will tell you not to bother, and we will say so on the phone rather than after a survey. Everywhere with a drive or a garage is straightforward: Worcester, Droitwich Spa, Malvern, Pershore, Evesham and Stratford-upon-Avon. If the survey finds the board is the limit rather than the supply, that is a fuse board upgrade and we will price it separately so you can decide. Businesses with a fleet or a customer car park want commercial EV charging instead, which is a different calculation again.

    Get an EV charger quote

Send a photo of your consumer unit, a photo of your sealed cut-out fuse, and a photo of where the car parks. That is usually enough for a firm number without a visit.

The cost to install an EV charger, and what moves it

The cost to install an EV charger is mostly the run and the supply, not the charger. A unit on the garage wall a couple of metres from the board is a straightforward day. The same charger at the far end of a Victorian terrace, with the board under the stairs and the parking on the street, is a different job entirely. Two things decide it before anything else: the rating of your main fuse, which says whether the supply can carry the charger alongside a shower and a cooker, and your earthing arrangement, which decides whether an earth rod or a device with open-PEN protection is needed. We check both and price the whole thing in writing, and if the answer is that the supply needs upgrading first we say so.

    Frequently asked questions

    EV Charger Installation: Your Questions

How much does an EV charger installation cost?

The unit, the cable run and the earthing decide it. A charge point on the wall the other side of the consumer unit is the cheap end. A detached garage across a driveway means heavier cable and a trench, and an earth electrode adds a rod and the time to drive and test it. We give one fixed figure after the survey and it does not move.

Do I need my fuse board upgraded first?

Not automatically. The charger needs a free way of getting a dedicated, correctly protected circuit out of the board. If the board is full, or it is an old plastic one with rewireable fuses, that is a separate job and we price it separately so you can see what is the charger and what is the board.

What is open-PEN protection and why does it keep coming up?

Most homes take their earth from the supply neutral, an arrangement called PME. If that combined conductor breaks out in the street, metal outdoors can go live, and a car on charge is a large piece of metal you are about to touch. Open-PEN protection watches the supply voltage and disconnects the charger if it drifts outside safe limits. Most current units have it built in. Where one does not, we install an earth electrode instead.

Is an EV charger notifiable under Part P?

Yes. It is a new circuit in a dwelling, so it is notifiable building work in England and Wales. We notify it and you get the certificate and the Building Control notice. If an installer does not mention notification, ask why.

Can I charge from a normal 13A socket instead?

You can, with the granny lead that came with the car, and for an occasional top-up it is fine. It is about three times slower, and a 13A socket and its cable were not designed to sit at close to full load for eight hours at a stretch. An old socket on an old circuit is the one that gets warm. If that is the plan, at least have the socket and its circuit checked first.

    Which charger should I get?

Tell us your car, where it parks and whether you are on an off-peak tariff, and we will give you two or three that suit and what separates them. Tethered saves you handling a cable; untethered outlasts a change of car. If your supply is tight, the deciding feature is whether the unit does load curtailment properly.

Do you have to tell the electricity network operator?

Yes, a domestic charge point is notified to the distribution network operator, and we handle that. It matters more than it sounds: it is how they know what the street is carrying before the next person on your road fits one.
