Socket repairs
When a socketneeds looking at
A socket rarely fails quietly. These are the signs that it is the socket and not the appliance.
- Browning or scorch marks around the pins
- The faceplate warm to the touch
- A plug that falls out or feels loose in the socket
- A buzzing or crackling sound when something is plugged in
- Cracks in the faceplate, or a socket that moves in the wall
- One socket dead while the rest of the ring works

Our process
How a socket repair works
Almost always same day, and usually priced on the phone.
- 1Describe itWhat it is doing, and whether anything smells hot.
- 2Isolate if it is hotIf it is scorched or warm, stop using it and we will say what to do.
- 3Priced on the callMost socket work is quoted before we come out.
- 4Repaired and testedThe connection remade or the accessory replaced, then tested.

Why it is worth doing
Fixed at the cause, not just the faceplate
Why a scorched socket is rarely only a socket.
- The connection checkedHeat usually means a loose terminal behind it.
- Same day where we canSmall work goes in the same day.
- Priced on the phoneBefore anybody comes out.
- Tested afterwardsThe circuit tested, not just the one point.

Everything to know about faulty socket repairs in Worcester
Dead, loose, or scorched, and what each one means
A dead socket is rarely the socket. On a ring final circuit, a loose or broken connection at one point can kill the sockets downstream of it while leaving the rest working, so the dead one is often the symptom and the faulty one is somewhere else on the same circuit. Replacing the dead faceplate on its own then fixes nothing, which is why the circuit gets tested rather than the visible casualty being swapped.
A loose socket, one where the plug wobbles or falls out under the weight of its own flex, is worth taking seriously rather than living with. Worn contacts mean a poor connection, a poor connection means heat, and heat at a socket is the beginning of the third problem on this list. It is also the cheapest of the three to deal with.
A scorched or browned socket is the one to stop using today. Discolouration around the pins means a connection has been running hot, and the important thing about that is what it does not do: a loose terminal does not draw enough extra current to trip anything, so the breaker sits there happily while the terminal cooks. That is why heat damage is found by smell or by sight rather than by the board. Swapping the faceplate is not the repair, because the cause is usually the terminal behind it, the cable end or the load that was plugged in. The cable tails get inspected, the circuit gets tested, and if the damage runs back into the cable that is said plainly.
One pattern worth naming: a socket that fails shortly after a high-load appliance was plugged into it. Heaters, kettles and portable air conditioners run near the limit for long periods and find any connection that was slightly loose to begin with. If that is your story, it is worth checking the rest of the circuit while we are there, because the same installer often made the same connection the same way at every point.
What a repair covers
The circuit tested, not just the faceplate changed.
- Circuit tested to find where the fault actually is
- Terminals and cable ends inspected behind the accessory
- Heat-damaged cable tails cut back or the cable replaced
- Accessory replaced like for like, or upgraded if you want USB
- The rest of the circuit checked where the pattern suggests it
- Made safe on the spot if the damage is worse than expected
- Test results for the circuit repaired
How a repair runs
Test the circuit
Which point is actually at fault, rather than which one stopped working.
Open it up
Terminals and cable ends inspected for heat damage before anything is replaced.
Repair
Accessory and any damaged cable end replaced, priced before it starts.
Retest
Circuit tested again before it goes back into service.
Socket repairs across Worcester and Worcestershire
Worcester, Droitwich Spa, Malvern, Pershore, Evesham and Stratford-upon-Avon. Where the fault is not at the socket at all, this becomes fault finding. Where several points on the same circuit show the same heat damage, the straight answer is usually a partial rewire of that circuit, and if you want more points while the floor is up, that is sockets and lighting.
Why a socket gets hot in the first place
Heat at a socket almost never starts at the faceplate. It starts at a connection behind it. The two usual causes are a terminal screw that was never fully tightened, and a back-stabbed connection where the conductor is held by a spring clip rather than a screw. Either one makes a small resistance, resistance makes heat, and heat makes the joint worse, which makes more heat. That is why a socket that has started to brown rarely gets better on its own and why replacing only the faceplate often does not fix it. The third cause is load: a 3kW heater or a tumble dryer run for hours from a socket on a spur will find any weakness in that spur. When we come to a scorched socket we open the connection rather than swap the front, check the conductors for damage, cut back anything that has annealed, and test the circuit afterwards to confirm nothing else on it has been cooking quietly for the same reason.
The electrical problems that are easy to miss
Most electrical faults announce themselves. The ones worth knowing about are the quiet ones. A socket that is warm to the touch after a heater has been on is not normal and is the earliest sign of a loose connection. A faint smell like hot plastic near a socket or a switch, with nothing visible, is worth a look the same week. A plug that has to be wiggled, or that falls out of its own weight, means the contacts inside have lost their grip and are arcing every time it is used. Brown or yellow discolouration around a pin hole is heat that has already happened. Lights that dim when a big appliance starts, in a house where they did not used to, suggests a connection somewhere is no longer solid. None of these is an emergency tonight. All of them get worse rather than better, because heat damages the joint that is making the heat.

Frequently asked questions
Faulty Socket Repairs: Your Questions
My socket is brown around the pins. Is that urgent?
Stop using it today. Browning means a connection has been running hot, and a loose terminal does not draw enough extra current to trip the breaker, so nothing on the board will warn you. It needs looking at rather than watching.
One socket is dead but the others work. What is wrong?
Usually a loose or broken connection somewhere on the circuit rather than a fault in the dead socket itself. On a ring, a bad joint at one point can kill the points after it. That is why the circuit gets tested rather than the dead faceplate simply swapped.
Can I just replace the faceplate myself?
If it is genuinely a cracked plate on a sound circuit, it is simple work. If it is discoloured, warm, or dead, the faceplate is the symptom and changing it leaves the cause in the wall. The cable ends behind it are what needs inspecting, and that means testing the circuit.
Why did it fail right after I used a heater in it?
Because a heater runs near the limit for hours and finds any connection that was already slightly loose. If that is what happened, it is worth checking the other points on the same circuit, since whoever wired one of them the same way probably wired them all that way.
Can you upgrade to USB sockets while you are here?
Yes, and it is the cheapest time to do it since the accessory is coming off anyway. Worth knowing that a USB socket module is deeper than a plain one, so a shallow back box sometimes has to be changed too, and we will tell you if yours is one.
Is a socket repair notifiable?
Replacing a damaged accessory on an existing circuit is not notifiable in England, outside a room containing a bath or shower. You still get the test results for the circuit, which is what shows the repair dealt with the cause.
