The signs that mean something, and the one that does not

Start with the cable. Rubber, lead or fabric insulation is the real thing: it goes brittle, it cracks when it is disturbed, and once it starts there is no repairing it. If you can see cloth-covered cable at the ceiling rose or something that looks like old hosepipe at the board, you are looking at a rewire rather than a repair. Round-pin sockets, a board with rewireable fuse carriers, and lighting circuits with no earth at the switch all point the same way.

Now the one that does not. Red and black cable is not a reason to rewire. The colours changed in the mid-2000s and a sound PVC installation from the eighties or nineties can be in good order and test perfectly well. It gets used as a selling point constantly. The question is not what colour the cores are, it is what the insulation resistance reads and what condition the accessories are in, and that is a half-day EICR rather than a guess. We would rather test first and tell you the wiring is fine.

Partial or full. A full rewire replaces everything from the board out. A partial does the circuits that have failed and leaves the ones that have not, and it is often the right call: a house where the lighting is original but the sockets were redone in an extension does not need its good circuits torn out. Partials are right when the test results support them and a dodge when they do not, so ask to see the readings the recommendation rests on.

The order matters more than people expect. We work room by room rather than opening the whole house at once, so you keep a kitchen and a bedroom in use throughout. First fix lifts floorboards, chases walls and pulls the new cable in. Second fix puts the accessories on and connects the board. A typical three-bedroom house is five to ten working days. Chasing makes dust and damage: we make good to a level that takes filler and paint, not a plasterer's finish, and if you want it skimmed that is a trade we will tell you to book rather than quietly leave undone.

Rewiring across Worcester and Worcestershire

The Victorian terraces in Barbourne and St John's are where most full rewires in Worcester come from, and the large older houses in Malvern are the other common one.
